ABOUT US

Balkan Development Center (BDC) is a non-governmental, non-profit and independent civil society organization based in Kraljevo, Serbia, dedicated to promoting sustainable development, social inclusion, active citizenship and balanced regional development.

Established with the mission of contributing to the development of democratic, inclusive and resilient communities, BDC works to strengthen local and regional capacities through innovative approaches to development planning, education, non-formal learning, citizen participation and cross-sector cooperation. The organization promotes modern methodologies and tools that support effective governance, socio-economic development and the protection of human and minority rights.

Since its establishment, BDC has been actively engaged in supporting local communities, institutions and civil society organizations in addressing development challenges and creating opportunities for sustainable growth. Our work is guided by the principles of sustainable development, good governance, social responsibility, equality, participation and partnership, contributing to the achievement of European and global development objectives and promoting balanced and inclusive development that leaves no one behind.

Our Mission

To support sustainable social, economic and environmental development by strengthening the capacities of communities, institutions and citizens, promoting participation and fostering cooperation between civil society, public institutions, educational organizations and the private sector.

Youth, Education, Sport and Culture

Over the years, BDC has become particularly active in the fields of youth development, non-formal education and international cooperation. The organization works closely with young people, youth workers, educators, trainers and local communities to create opportunities for learning, personal and professional development, active participation and social inclusion.

BDC designs and implements training programmes, workshops, seminars, youth exchanges, study visits and capacity-building activities that promote:

  • personal and professional competencies;
  • entrepreneurship and employability skills;
  • digital and green skills;
  • leadership and active citizenship;
  • intercultural learning and dialogue;
  • inclusion and diversity;
  • volunteering and community engagement.

The organization strongly believes in the value of non-formal education as a tool for empowering individuals and communities and regularly applies innovative educational methodologies, participatory approaches and experiential learning methods in its activities.

BDC also promotes sport and physical activity as powerful instruments for social inclusion, healthy lifestyles, intergenerational dialogue and community development. Through various projects and initiatives, the organization uses sport to encourage participation, tolerance, teamwork and social cohesion.

Recognising the important role of culture and cultural heritage in strengthening communities and promoting mutual understanding, BDC supports cultural initiatives, intercultural dialogue and activities that encourage creativity, cultural participation and appreciation of diversity.

International cooperation and the exchange of experiences and good practices are at the core of the organization’s work. Through partnerships with organizations, institutions and networks across Europe and beyond, BDC creates opportunities for learning, innovation and the transfer of knowledge, contributing to stronger communities and sustainable development.

What We Do

To achieve its mission and objectives, BDC:

  • Develops and implements local, national and international projects and programmes;
  • Provides technical assistance and capacity-building support to public institutions, civil society organizations and local communities;
  • Designs and promotes modern approaches and methodologies for sustainable local and regional development;
  • Organizes conferences, seminars, trainings, workshops, study visits, youth exchanges and other educational activities;
  • Designs and delivers non-formal education programmes, training methodologies and learning materials;
  • Conducts research, analyses and assessments to support evidence-based policymaking and development planning;
  • Develops strategies, action plans and practical tools for sustainable development and social inclusion;
  • Promotes cooperation and effective communication among public institutions, civil society organizations, businesses and citizens;
  • Encourages networking, partnerships and the exchange of knowledge and good practices at local, national and international levels;
  • Supports and promotes citizen participation, volunteering and civic engagement in decision-making processes;
  • Implements advocacy and awareness-raising initiatives related to social inclusion, sustainable development, human rights, sport and culture;
  • Produces publications, educational materials and research documents in areas relevant to its mission;
  • Cooperates with educational institutions, professional associations, businesses and international organizations in achieving common development goals;
  • Provides support to communities and organizations in designing and implementing development initiatives and projects;
  • Monitors trends and emerging challenges in areas relevant to the organization’s work and continuously adapts its activities to maximize impact and sustainability.

Our Approach

BDC believes that sustainable development can only be achieved through cooperation, innovation and the active participation of all stakeholders. Therefore, the organization promotes multi-sector partnerships and works closely with local communities, public authorities, educational institutions, businesses, international organizations and civil society actors to develop practical and sustainable solutions that improve the quality of life of citizens.

Over the years, BDC has implemented and participated in numerous projects and initiatives at local, national and international levels, addressing issues such as social inclusion, youth empowerment, education, non-formal learning, entrepreneurship, employment, environmental protection, sport, culture, community development and institutional strengthening.

Today, the Balkan Development Center serves as a platform for positive social change, connecting people, institutions and communities, promoting learning and cooperation, and creating opportunities for sustainable and inclusive development in Serbia, the Western Balkans and beyond.
